We did a little work mixed in with a lot of fun with beautiful results! Our members are what make this club better!

Labor Day

By Elks Lodge #1199 · Comments (0)

Labor Day differs in every essential way from the other holidays of the year in any country. A lot of the holidays are more or less connected with conflicts and battles of man’s hunger of greed and power.

Labor Day is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race or nation. It short version it is the end of summer.

The first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. In 1884 the day was moved to the 1st Monday of September. On June 28th, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September a legal holiday.

To celebrate the many years of hard labor that you have completed, or are in the process of completing, please display your American flag on this holiday, Labor Day.

Americanism Chairman

The Elks National Foundation provides more than $3.5 million in college scholarships each year. The Most Valuable Student (MVS) scholarships are open to ANY graduating high school senior. Legacy Awards are available to the children and grandchildren of active Elks members. Emergency Educational Grants are available only to the children of deceased or totally disabled Elks. The application process and deadlines vary for each of the programs. Applications for the Legacy Award and the Most Valuable Student scholarships will be available online at www.elks.org/enf on September 1, 2010.

Legacy Award applications will be completed entirely online, and are due on February 1, 2011.

The Most Valuable Student Scholarship applications are due to Lodges on December 1, 2010.

In addition to being available online, area high school counselors will be receiving information and applications for the Most Valuable Student scholarships. The school counselors should, hopefully, have the information by mid-September.

The 500 national MVS finalists will be required to submit a secondary application online. Top winners will be announced April 15, 2011.

After the December 1 deadline for the MVS scholarships, our Bismarck-Mandan Lodge Scholarship Committee will meet to determine which scholarship applications will be forwarded to the state level for further judging. Our lodge will forward the top 3 young men’s and the top 3 young women’s scholarship applications to the state level. Not only will those 6 students have the opportunity to advance to the national level for judging, each will receive a scholarship award from our Bismarck-Mandan Lodge.

If you have a high school senior, or know someone who does, please consider taking advantage of these wonderful opportunities!

Michael Deisz
Bismarck-Mandan Scholarship Chairman

Your Elks Chorus will soon be back in action after a busy July and a much needed break during the month of August.

We were honored to be a participant in the Lodge 1199 centennial observance on July 15. What a great milestone for the nation’s largest Elks Lodge. Kudos to Exalted Ruler Andrea Frank, our lodge’s first female ER, for organizing a truly memorable event.

Our annual appearance at the Mandan Bandshell on July 20 was notable for a couple of reasons: no wind and no competition from BNSF!

We enjoyed the hospitality of the Dickinson Lodge at the state convention July 30-31, where we entertained on Friday afternoon and again Saturday morning for the Memorial Service. A highlight was our pre-show appearance at the Medora Musical.

Our season resumes with an appearance at the United Methodist convention September 17. We’ll be at First Lutheran in Mandan September 26, with Chorus member Don Engbrecht for his annual church youth benefit.

We’re looking forward to another busy year entertaining folks in the Bismarck-Mandan community.

The Chorus will resume rehearsals at 7:00 pm every Tuesday, beginning September 14. If you’re interested in joining a dedicated, fun-loving group of men who love to sing, please join us. No auditions required.
